Six 50G-family part numbers, each with its own bundle and renewal SKUs: the 51G adds a 64 GB SSD; the -SFP adds a GE SFP port for a fiber handoff; the -SFP-POE has PoE+ ports and its own 54 V adapter; the -5G a built-in cellular WAN modem; the -DSL a DSL port. The specs, port map and photo on this page are for the 50G and 51G. The other variants differ in ports, so we check their figures in the datasheet before quoting. The 51G-SFP-POE and 51G-5G are also on the price list; ask by part number.
Bundle note. Fortinet’s current 50G datasheet (2026-09-29) notes that Content Disarm and Reconstruct, DNS and video filtering, and inline CASB are not available on the 30G and 50G series in any FortiOS build, although Fortinet’s bundle descriptions include them.

Against the 30G, the 50G more than doubles threat protection (1.1 Gbps against 500 Mbps) and adds a LAN port, USB and VDOMs for $1,093 against $697 at list.
The 70G ($1,562 list) is a step up in ports more than inspection: ten gigabit ports with two WAN, a PoE variant, threat protection of 1.3 Gbps against 1.1 Gbps, and twice the firewall throughput (10 against 5 Gbps). If a switch behind the firewall handles the LAN, the 50G is usually enough.

We check your current unit’s lifecycle dates and Trade-Up eligibility per serial number rather than publish a guessed mapping. See FortiGate end-of-life replacement. The 50G is our usual pick when a managed switch handles the LAN and the circuit is between about 300 Mbps and 1 Gbps.
Plain 50G for a copper handoff. The -SFP when the ISP hands off on fiber. The -SFP-POE to power a couple of access points or phones without a PoE switch. The -5G for a cellular primary or backup circuit (the carrier plan is separate). The -DSL only where DSL is the circuit. The 51G versions add local storage.
The datasheet lists Active-Active, Active-Passive and Clustering. There is no dedicated HA port: heartbeat runs over data ports, and Fortinet recommends at least two heartbeat links. Each unit carries its own bundle. With five ports per unit, a 50G pair works for a simple site but leaves little room; a single 70G or 90G is often the better spend.
Size to threat-protection throughput (1.1 Gbps), not the 5 Gbps firewall figure. SSL deep inspection is 1.3 Gbps and 699 new inspected sessions per second on the datasheet. Five VDOMs at most. Logs go to FortiAnalyzer, FortiAnalyzer Cloud ($216.30 per year list) or FortiGate Cloud; the 51G ($1,246 list) adds a 64 GB SSD.
A bare FG-50G gets 1 year of hardware coverage but only 90 days of firmware and ticket support. A 1-year UTP renewal lists at $504.70. Renewal SKUs differ for every variant (GT50G, GT51G, F50GS, F50GP, F50G5, F50GD), so we match them to the serial. The datasheet says Content Disarm and Reconstruct, DNS and video filtering, and inline CASB are not available on the 50G series. Unregistered contracts auto-start 60 days after shipment in the US and Canada.

Yes. The datasheet lists Active-Active, Active-Passive and Clustering. Each unit needs its own bundle, and with no dedicated HA port the heartbeat links use data ports, so check the port count before choosing HA on a five-port box.
You can buy the appliance alone, but every FortiGate we sell carries at least FortiCare ($144.20 per year list for FortiCare Premium on a 50G), because the bare unit gets only 90 days of firmware. A bundle adds FortiGuard UTP or Enterprise Protection.
