Against the 70G ($1,562 list), the 90G nearly doubles threat protection (2.2 Gbps against 1.3) and IPS (4.5 against 2.5 Gbps) and adds two 10G-capable WAN pairs, but has two fewer gigabit ports and no PoE variant.
The 901G ($49,411 list) is a different class: 1RU, 30 Gbps threat protection, 25G and 10G cages and a dedicated HA port. Other models sit between the two (the 120G, for example); we quote those by part number.

Fortinet's Trade-Up eligibility is per serial number; we check your unit against the current Trade-Up matrix rather than publish a guessed mapping. See FortiGate end-of-life replacement. It is also where a 70G-class office lands once the circuit passes 1 Gbps or the core switch moves to 10G.
Each WAN is a shared-media pair: a 10/5/2.5/1G copper port or an SFP+/SFP cage, one or the other. Two 10G uplinks total, so a 10G core switch link and a multi-gig WAN use both. If you take the SFP+ side, order transceivers (FN-TRAN-SFP+SR lists at $72). The eight gigabit ports are for LAN, HA heartbeat and FortiLink.
No dedicated HA port: cable two of the gigabit ports directly between the units as heartbeat links (Fortinet recommends at least two, with different priorities). Each unit carries its own bundle; the current price list has no 90G HA SKU. For a single unit, the lower-cost resilience step is the optional second power adapter, since the box ships with one.
New units are created in FortiManager as model devices by serial number and staged before shipping, so the config installs when the box first connects. Replacements go through config conversion plus a hand check of interface mapping, removed features and policies.
Inspected HTTPS is the limit before bandwidth is: 2.6 Gbps and 1,400 new inspected sessions per second on the datasheet. No local disk: logs go to FortiAnalyzer, FortiAnalyzer Cloud ($819.60 per year list) or FortiGate Cloud. The 91G ($4,314 list) adds a 120 GB SSD if you need on-box log retention.
A bare FG-90G gets 1 year of hardware coverage but only 90 days of firmware and ticket support. A 1-year UTP renewal lists at $1,912.40. Multi-year terms change the annualized cost; the quote shows the exact term and total list price. Contracts not registered within 60 days of shipment auto-start in the US and Canada, so register on arrival.

No. Each WAN is a shared-media pair, so you use either the 10/5/2.5/1G copper port or the SFP+/SFP cage. The 90G has two such pairs, giving two 10G-capable interfaces in total.
Only on FortiOS 7.0.12 through 7.0.15, per Fortinet's datasheet. In practice, plan remote access on IPsec IKEv2 or ZTNA. See our SSL-VPN migration page if you are moving from a unit that runs it today.
It accepts up to two external power adapters and ships with one. Order the second if a single adapter failure should not take the site down.
Yes. The datasheet lists Active-Active, Active-Passive and Clustering. Heartbeat runs over two of the gigabit ports cabled directly between the units, and each unit needs its own bundle; the current price list has no 90G HA SKU.
You can buy the appliance alone, but every FortiGate we sell carries at least FortiCare ($546.40 per year list for FortiCare Premium on a 90G), because the bare unit gets only 90 days of firmware. A bundle adds FortiGuard UTP or Enterprise Protection.
