IPS, application control, NGFW and threat protection are measured with logging enabled; NGFW with firewall, IPS and application control on; threat protection adds malware protection. IPsec uses AES256-SHA256. SSL inspection uses an average of HTTPS sessions across cipher suites. The datasheet still lists SSL-VPN tunnel-mode figures; those do not apply on FortiOS 7.6.3 and later, so they are left out here. The 450 M session and 7 M new-session figures require the Hyperscale Firewall License (LIC-FGT-HYPSC). The datasheet lists CAPWAP throughput and compliance as TBA, so they are left out.
SSL-VPN status. SSL-VPN tunnel mode was removed from every FortiGate in FortiOS 7.6.3, the 3800G included. Browser-based web mode is still available on models that support it; tunnel mode is gone on every model. Full-tunnel remote access is IPsec (IKEv2); ZTNA covers access to individual applications. The 3500G ($302,702 list) rates 105 Gbps threat protection and 125 Gbps IPS against 200 and 250 Gbps, but its SSL inspection (112 Gbps) is close to the 3800G’s 120 Gbps. It is 2RU on 100–240 V AC with two supplies, AC only, with two 400G QSFP-DD, four 100G QSFP28 and thirty 25G SFP28 cages. Step up to the 3800G for threat-protection headroom, 50G and 200G ports, more 400G cages, DC power or the Hyperscale license.

What we check before this model goes on a quote, from the engineer who sizes, stages and installs it.
Fortinet’s datasheet does not name a predecessor for the 3800G series, and we do not publish a guessed mapping. We check your current unit’s lifecycle dates and Trade-Up eligibility per serial number, then size the 3800G (or 3801G) on your measured traffic with inspection on.
The front panel marks two 50G SFP56 slots HA1 and HA2 and two 200G QSFP56 slots HA3 and HA4, plus two 10G RJ45 management ports, so heartbeat and session sync do not use data ports. Fortinet recommends at least two heartbeat links, cabled directly between the units. Both units need their own bundle, and the current price list has no 3800G HA SKU, so an HA pair on 3-year UTP comes to $2,708,842 on Fortinet’s price list, shown for reference; we quote by exact part number.
3RU, 26.13 in deep and 71.65 lb, with four hot-swap supplies and a hot-swap fan tray. The AC models take 200–240 V AC only, not 120 V, and draw up to 1,950 W; plan the PDUs and circuits before ordering. The rated operating range is 0–40 °C, lower than the 0–45 °C of the 3000G and 3500G. The DC models take −48 to −60 V DC.
Four 400G QSFP-DD ports, six 200G QSFP56 (two marked HA), eighteen 50G SFP56 (two WAN, two HA) and two 10G RJ45 management ports; no copper data ports. Two SR optics come in the box. The datasheet’s transceiver list stops at 100G QSFP28 (FN-TRAN-QSFP28-SR and others), so 400G, 200G and 50G optics are confirmed with Fortinet by part number before we quote.
Both members are added in FortiManager as model devices by serial number and staged before they ship. For a migration from an existing FortiGate or another vendor, we convert the config, rebuild interface mapping onto the new port layout, and run the old and new units side by side in a cutover window with a rollback path. VDOMs: 10 by default, up to 500.
Threat protection is 200 Gbps, but SSL inspection is 120 Gbps with 114,000 new inspected sessions per second, close to the 3500G’s 112 Gbps and 112,345. If the design is limited by SSL inspection rather than threat protection or port speed, the 3800G adds little over the 3500G. The 450 M session and 7 M new-session figures need the Hyperscale Firewall License (LIC-FGT-HYPSC); without it they are 200 M and 1.11 M.

Fortinet list price is $494,471 for the appliance alone (AC or DC), $781,121 with 1 year of FortiCare Premium and UTP, $1,354,421 for 3 years and $1,927,721 for 5 years (price list effective 2026-09-07). Your quote confirms current pricing, tax and shipping.
Two units, each with its own bundle. At Fortinet list prices (for reference), two FG-3800G-BDL-950-36 (3 years UTP) come to $2,708,842, plus optics, which are quoted separately. The current price list has no shared-license HA SKU for the 3800G.
Same ports and performance figures. The 3801G adds 2x 1.92 TB SSD for local logging and disk-based features and lists at $509,471 against $494,471 for the 3800G. AC and DC versions of each list at the same price.
Only if the rack is fed from −48 to −60 V DC power. The AC models need 200–240 V AC circuits. The DC model lists at the same price as AC but uses its own bundle and renewal part numbers, so tell us which one is installed when you renew. FortiCare Premium alone on a 3800G lists at $81,900 per year.
Not in tunnel mode on FortiOS 7.6.3 or later; Fortinet removed it from all models. Browser-based web mode is still available on models that support it; tunnel mode is gone on every model. Full-tunnel remote access is IPsec (IKEv2); ZTNA covers access to individual applications.
